Cover Design and Exploration

Designs_On is a semi-annual publication of innovative ideas, from within IDEO, on a specific challenge. I had the opportunity to concept the cover image for the issue on aging. I wanted to convey the idea of time passing but break from the stereotypical or insulting images we tend to see in the world. The final concept was inspired by the journey from youth to old age and what occurs along a spectrum—the transition can not be pinned to a particular moment and yet we understand there is a shift. 

I sketched out letterforms that can read as old or new, depending on the perspective you view them. I worked with the IDEO shop to 3D print the designs and then photographed the pieces.
